Commercial concrete polishing is a multi-step process of turning rough concrete surfaces into smooth, reflective, and durable floors. The process starts with concrete grinding, where diamond-segmented abrasive tools are used for levelling the surface and removing any imperfections. The grinding process is critical in preparing the surface for concrete polishing, which involves gradually using finer abrasives to achieve the desired level of shine and smoothness.
Polished concrete offers numerous benefits for commercial and industrial spaces. It’s extremely durable, resistant to heavy traffic, and requires minimal maintenance, making it an economical choice for large-scale facilities. Polished concrete also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your space, creating a professional, clean look that can withstand the rigors of daily use.
1. Surface Preparation and Grinding:
The process begins with thorough surface preparation, where we assess the condition of your concrete floor and identify any imperfections. We then use industrial-grade diamond tools to grind the surface, removing any existing coatings, adhesives, or uneven areas. This step is crucial as it creates a level foundation, allowing for an even polish. The grinding process also exposes the concrete’s aggregate, which can add a unique texture and visual interest to the final result.
2. Progressive Polishing:
After grinding, we move on to the polishing phase. Using diamond-embedded abrasives with progressively finer grits, we polish the concrete to achieve the desired level of sheen, from a matte finish to a high-gloss shine. Each polishing pass further refines the surface, enhancing its smoothness and increasing its reflective qualities.
3. Hardening and Sealing:
To increase the durability of the polished concrete, we apply a densifier or hardener. This chemical treatment penetrates the concrete, filling in pores and creating a denser, harder surface that’s resistant to wear and tear. After hardening, we apply a sealant or stain guard to protect the floor from stains, spills, and moisture. This step also enhances the color and clarity of the polished surface.
4. Final Burnishing:
The process concludes with a final burnishing, where a high-speed buffer is used to further enhance the floor’s shine and bring out a mirror-like finish. This step ensures that your polished concrete floor not only looks stunning but is also protected and ready for use.
Ace Avant’s Specialty Division holds a Craftsman Level Certification from the Concrete Polishing Council of the ASCC. We provide a variety of polishing methods and products, ensuring top-quality services tailored to meet the unique needs of your project.
Ace Avant offers the Troika Polishing System – a 3-head Planetary Attachment that attaches to a skid steer. With the Troika system, up to 10,000 square feet of open floor can be polished to completion in a single day per machine. This system achieves walk-behind quality with the added speed of three heads, making it ideal for large, open areas. The Troika System is best suited for open floors greater than 10,000 square feet. With 3 machines we can produce 30,000 square feet high quality polishing per day. This method ensures uniformity and consistency in the polish, providing a sleek and professional finish suitable for commercial and industrial applications.
Power Trowel Polishing is a cost-saving system. When used alone, it is ideal for a simplified system where extremely flat, well-placed floors can attain a good polish. This system often takes the same time as several walk-behind machines, working to attain the same class of aggregate and appearance of polish. Power Trowel Polishing is particularly effective for large-scale projects where efficiency and time-saving are critical. The system can quickly cover expansive areas, making it perfect for warehouses, factories, and other large facilities that require a durable and attractive flooring solution.
In many instances, walk-behind polishers are the only option. We offer both wet and dry grinding, as well as electric or propane options with these machines. These are best suited for office/retail buildings and upfit projects. Walk-behind polishers provide flexibility and precision, making them ideal for detailed work and smaller areas that require a high level of finish. This method allows for greater control over the grinding and polishing process, ensuring that every inch of the floor meets the standards of quality.
Saves Cost:
Polished concrete is a cost-effective flooring solution, reducing the need for additional materials and minimizing long-term maintenance expenses.
Reflects Light:
Polished concrete is the selection for building owners, architects and designers as it decreases the need for interior lighting, and projects a clean, professional image.
Low Life-Cycle Cost:
The annual maintenance cost of polished floors is a fraction of traditional floor coverings or epoxy resinous floor coatings.
Less Moisture Vapor Transmission Problems:
A polished concrete floor allows concrete slab moisture to transmit and breathe. In comparison, other floor converings, flooring adhesives, and resinous floor coatings are very sensitive and have strict moisture limitations.
Durability:
Polished concrete floors withstand heavy traffic and wear, making it ideal for high-use areas.
